What the ESA is

The state's funding follows your student to the school you choose.

The Empowerment Scholarship Account (ESA) redirects the state funding already set aside for your child to the school you choose. It comes in two parts, and the difference matters.

Universal ESA

Every Arizona student in grades K–12 is eligible. You don't need a diagnosis to apply.

The special-education award

Separate funding for students with specific diagnoses, autism among them. The diagnosis has to be on an evaluation or an IEP. With it on file, Arizona ESA can reduce Gateway tuition to $0.

Award amounts vary by school district and diagnosis, so admissions will look at your specific case. The Arizona Department of Education lists every category on its ESA eligibility page.

That list is about ESA funding, not about getting into Gateway. The Arizona Department of Education decides whether your student receives an award. Gateway decides whether Gateway is the right school. Neither one decides the other.

Gateway is the narrower of the two: every Gateway student has autism, so an IEP for something else can fund a private education without making Gateway the right fit. Our answer comes after we have met your student, which is what tours and shadow days are for.

How ESA works

Four steps to ESA funding.

Apply for ESA

You apply to the Arizona Department of Education, not to Gateway. Have proof of Arizona residency and your student's birth certificate ready. For the special-education award, include the IEP, MET, 504 Plan or IEE that is current when you apply.

Get awarded

It takes 30 days from the date of application to receive your Award Letter, and nothing speeds that review up. Send it complete: if documents are missing, the state asks for them and the 30 days start again once they arrive.

Enroll at Gateway

Don't wait for the Award Letter to call us. Gateway admissions runs alongside your ESA application, not after it, and we coordinate the two.

Set up ClassWallet

Approval isn't the last step. ESA families pay tuition through ClassWallet, billed quarterly, and nothing can be paid until your ClassWallet login works. If it hasn't arrived after you're approved, call us and we'll help you sort it out.
