About Gateway AcademyMore than a school.
A village.

Founded in 2005, Gateway Academy is Arizona's non-profit private day school for bright, neurodivergent, twice-exceptional students. Grades 6–12, on 8.5 acres at the base of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.

Our story

Started by a 2e family.

Gateway was founded in 2005 by O. Robin Sweet, who brought 20+ years in education and autism programming, together with her husband Thomas Bloom, Ph.D., a longtime college president and chancellor. Their own son was in 8th grade at the time. He attended Gateway, and later graduated from it.

Two decades later, that origin still sets the tone. Gateway is the place where students who were once bullied or underserved in traditional schools finally feel they belong — a community that sees academic strength and neurodivergence as two sides of the same student.

Gateway Academy is the place where previously bullied and ostracized students finally find their tribe.

Our mission

We propel the whole student.

Gateway Academy exists to propel bright, neurodivergent students. We deliver academic rigor, ASU dual-enrollment credit, and three diploma pathways, engineered around how each student's mind actually works, so that 100% of our students in grades 8–12 earn college credit. We do the developmental work other fast-track schools skip, because momentum without support is a setup, not a strength.

What “twice-exceptional” means

Two truths,
one student.

Most schools are built for one kind of need at a time. Gateway is built for students who are simultaneously academically bright and neurodivergent, two truths in one student, a combination that's widely missed.

The masking problem. A student's academic strength can hide their difference, and their difference can mask their strengths, so 2e learners are routinely missed or misread in traditional schools.
Strength-first, by design. 2e students thrive when you develop the talent and support the difference at the same time. That's the whole model at Gateway, not remediation, but balance.

32,000 sq ft campus, two-story classroom building, full-size gymnasium, full-size athletic field, and an outdoor playground, all at the base of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve.

Animals & nature

Therapy dogs Apollo & Athena on campus every day, Snorlax the Destroyer (our resident desert tortoise), and Goldie the axolotl.
