In short

  • Families move from other states to attend Gateway. Visit before you move, because the decision is made in person.
  • Arizona ESA requires the student and the parent applying to be Arizona residents, so the application comes after you have an Arizona address.
  • Once a completed application is in, the Arizona Department of Education processes it within 30 days.
  • An IEP or 504 Plan from another state won't count for the special-education award on its own. Universal ESA doesn't need one.
  • Gateway is a day school with no boarding, so choose where to live with the daily drive in mind.

Some families find Gateway from another state. They've read about Arizona ESA, they've found a school that sounds right for their student, and now they're weighing a move to Phoenix. Families do move from other states to attend Gateway. This is what to know first, in the order it comes up.

Who is Gateway for?

Gateway is for bright, neurodivergent, twice-exceptional students in grades 6–12. Every student has autism, and every student is academically capable. If you've been looking for a school in Arizona for a student with high-functioning autism, this guide is written for you. Support happens inside the school day, and the academics are college-prep. See how support works at Gateway.

Gateway Academy is a non-profit private day school in Phoenix, founded in 2005. It is accredited by WASC and COGNIA and approved by the Arizona Department of Education. Gateway offers three diploma pathways, and students often combine them: a college-prep diploma, dual enrollment through ASU Accelerate, and a career-technical diploma through Penn Foster. 100% of students in grades 8–12 earn college credit. The ratio is 12:1 in middle school and 14:1 in high school.

How do we visit from out of state?

Plan a trip to Phoenix for a tour, and ask for a shadow day on the same visit. A move is too big a decision to make from a website, and at Gateway, the decision is never made over the phone. It's made in person: a tour first, then a shadow day, when your student joins classes and meets the students they'd be learning with.

Start by calling admissions at (480) 998-1071. Talk through your student's story, schedule a tour, and ask whether there's space in your student's grade. Our tour checklist has the questions worth bringing.

Can families from other states use Arizona ESA?

Yes, once you live in Arizona. Arizona ESA is open to every Arizona student in grades K–12. For a family moving here, the important word is Arizona. The Arizona Department of Education requires the student and the parent applying to be Arizona residents.

Arizona ESA funding can make Gateway tuition $0 for qualifying students. Our team walks families through ESA every week, so ask admissions how it applies to your student. Our step-by-step ESA guide covers the application, the Award Letter and ClassWallet, and the Tuition & ESA page has the full detail.

Do we have to live in Arizona before applying?

Yes. You prove residency with documents in your name that show your Arizona address, such as a utility bill issued within the past 60 days. ADE also verifies residency when you apply, and every year after that.

In practice, the ESA application comes after you have an Arizona address, not before. Once a completed application is in, ADE processes it within 30 days. Tuition can't be paid through ESA until the award comes through and your ClassWallet account works, so build that month into your plans. ADE lists every accepted document on its ESA eligibility page.

Will an IEP from another state count?

Not on its own for the special-education award. Arizona ESA has a separate award for students with a disability, and this is the part a moving family should read closely. ADE asks for an evaluation, IEP or 504 Plan that comes from an Arizona public school and is current when you apply. An IEP or 504 Plan from another state won't count for this award on its own.

There are two ways to get the paperwork ADE accepts. Once you live here, you can ask your new Arizona school district for an evaluation and IEP. ADE says these come from the district you live in or the district your student attends, at the parent's request. ADE also accepts an educational evaluation from a licensed physician, psychologist or psychiatrist. It does not accept evaluations from a private school.

For students in grades 1 to 12, ADE also lists a 45-day requirement for this award: the student must have been enrolled full time in an Arizona public school for 45 days of the current or previous school year before you apply.

While you sort that out, universal ESA is open to every Arizona student in grades K–12, with no evaluation needed. Rules like these are easy to misread, so call ADE at (602) 364-1969 to confirm your own situation before you plan your budget around a specific award. ADE's eligibility page has the full rules.

What if your state doesn't have an ESA?

Many states have no program like it. EdChoice, a non-profit that tracks school choice programs state by state, says so plainly on its pages for several of them:

Programs change, so check your own state's page on EdChoice for the current picture. Arizona's is different: eligibility for Arizona ESA became universal in 2022, and it is open to every Arizona student in grades K–12 (ADE).

Is Gateway a boarding school?

No. Gateway is a day school with no boarding. Your student lives at home and comes to campus every day. The campus is at 3939 E. Shea Blvd. in Phoenix, at the base of the Phoenix Mountain Preserve, and families come from across the Valley, including Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and North Phoenix.

Choose where to live with the daily drive in mind. Try the route at the hours you'd actually drive it before you commit to a neighborhood.

On a Gateway tour, the question families ask most is how their student will get to school every day. Many Gateway families carpool. Others use Paratransit, which costs $8 a day for the round trip. If you're moving, ask admissions about both while you're still choosing where to live.

What order should we do things in?

Visit first, move second, and apply for ESA once you have an Arizona address.

  • Call admissions, talk through your student's story, and ask whether there's space in their grade.
  • Plan a trip to Phoenix for a tour, and ask about a shadow day on the same visit.
  • Choose where to live with the drive to 3939 E. Shea Blvd. in mind.
  • Once you have an Arizona address, apply for ESA through the Arizona Department of Education's ESA site, and allow 30 days.
  • Set up ClassWallet as soon as the award comes through, and submit Gateway's Enrollment Packet. With ESA approval, your student can start right away.

Gateway has rolling admissions, so a move doesn't have to wait for the start of a school year. More on each step is on the Admissions page.

Common questions

Can we use Arizona ESA if we're moving from another state?

Yes, once you live in Arizona. ESA requires the student and the parent applying to be Arizona residents, proven with documents such as a utility bill issued within the past 60 days. Once a completed application is in, the Arizona Department of Education processes it within 30 days.

Does Arizona ESA cover students with autism?

Yes. Universal ESA is open to every Arizona student in grades K–12, including students with autism, with no evaluation needed. Arizona ESA also has a separate special-education award with its own paperwork and enrollment rules. Arizona ESA funding can make Gateway tuition $0 for qualifying students.

Will an IEP from another state count for Arizona ESA?

Not for the special-education award on its own. ADE asks for a current evaluation, IEP or 504 Plan from an Arizona public school, or an educational evaluation from a licensed physician, psychologist or psychiatrist. Universal ESA doesn't need one, because it's open to every Arizona student in grades K–12. Call the Arizona Department of Education at (602) 364-1969 to confirm your situation.

Does Gateway offer boarding?

No. Gateway is a day school, so students live at home and come to campus every day. Families come from across the Valley, including Scottsdale, Paradise Valley and North Phoenix.

When can my student start?

Gateway has rolling admissions and reviews applications year-round, including mid-year transfers. Gateway doesn't go over its 12:1 ratio in middle school or 14:1 in high school, so when a class is full, there is a waiting list. Once your Enrollment Packet is in, your student can start right away with ESA approval.

Can we start talking to Gateway before we move?

Yes. Call admissions at (480) 998-1071 and schedule a tour. The decision is made in person, on a tour and a shadow day, so plan your first trip to Phoenix around the visit.

Who should we call?

For questions about ESA eligibility, call the Arizona Department of Education at (602) 364-1969. For anything about Gateway, call the front office at (480) 998-1071, or schedule a tour whenever you're ready.
